Attacker on Azerbaijani embassy in Iran sentenced to death

The accused in the attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Iran has been sentenced to death, a decision upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. This was announced by Asghar Jahangir, a representative of Iran’s judiciary.

“Iran’s Supreme Court has confirmed the death penalty for the individual who attacked the embassy. The case has been sent to Tehran for the execution of the sentence,” Jahangir stated, as reported by APA.

Yasin Huseynzadeh’s attack led to the suspension of Azerbaijan’s embassy operations in Tehran. On January 29, 2023, 53 embassy staff and their families were evacuated to Baku. The embassy later reopened.

On January 27, 2023, a gunman armed with a Kalashnikov rifle stormed Azerbaijan’s embassy in Iran, killing security chief Orkhan Askerov. Two security staff members were injured while attempting to stop the attacker.
