Armenia discusses nuclear plant construction with Korea, China

Armenia is negotiating with Korea and China, in addition to Russia and the U.S., for the construction of a nuclear power plant, according to the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Factor.am reports.

The ministry stated that various existing technologies and reactor systems in the field of nuclear energy are currently under review for the construction of new nuclear energy units. The type and capacity of the unit will be determined based on proposals and calculations derived from technical and economic feasibility studies.

During a 2024 year-end press conference, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan announced that the Armenian government is holding discussions with multiple countries regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant. However, the specific countries were not disclosed at the time.

In August 2023, during a government session, a decision was made to establish a closed joint-stock company to manage the new nuclear energy unit construction project. This company will oversee bid reviews, the final model selection for the energy unit, and construction supervision. It will participate in all project phases up to the plant’s operational launch.

The ministry also revealed that an American company is conducting a technical and economic study to assess the feasibility of constructing a small modular nuclear power plant in Armenia.

The concept of modular nuclear plants was initially raised by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a government session a year ago.
