EP backs Armenia’s decision to freeze CSTO participation

The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has voted on the annual reports on the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defense Policy, which also address Armenia-EU relations.

The reports highlight positive developments in bilateral cooperation and welcome the assistance provided to Armenia through the European Peace Facility. They also emphasize the importance of the EU monitoring mission, Armenpress reports.

European Parliament members support Armenia’s decision to suspend its participation in the CSTO and stress the urgent need for the release of 23 Armenian prisoners of war and hostages held in Baku.

"The annual reports on the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defense Policy also emphasize the importance of the return of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians to their homes," the documents say.

The documents stress that Armenia-Azerbaijan relations should be settled in accordance with the Alma-Ata Declaration. At the same time, MEPs call for the termination of the EU-Azerbaijan energy cooperation memorandum and urge EU member states to cease providing technical, security, and financial support to Azerbaijan.

The reports also emphasize the need for the EU to become a more autonomous and cohesive force in addressing global challenges. MEPs stress that “wars, energy crises, and humanitarian emergencies demand a bolder and more consistent foreign policy based on democratic values.”

The reports note that relations with Turkey remain complicated despite a slight decrease in tensions. The European Parliament has criticized Ankara’s support for Hamas and urged the EU to adopt a more coordinated foreign policy approach.

The annual reports will be put to a vote during an upcoming European Parliament plenary session.
