Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown openness to the idea of allowing the transit of Azerbaijani gas through Ukraine. However, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico believes the most beneficial option for Europe would be for Kyiv to resume the transportation of Russian gas, Fakti.bg reports.
"Under the enormous pressure we are putting on Zelensky, Ukraine is starting to talk about its readiness to consider the possibility of transiting Azerbaijani gas through its territory to Europe," Fico stated, as quoted by the TA3 television channel. The Slovak leader emphasized that “the most reasonable solution for Europe would be to continue the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.”
Fico warned that Zelensky's decision to halt Russian gas transit has led to severe consequences, particularly reflected in rising gas prices across Europe. While he acknowledged that Slovakia currently faces no issues with domestic gas consumption, he expressed concerns about potential difficulties in filling storage reserves by 2026. He also pointed out that the country is suffering financial losses due to reduced transit fees.
Furthermore, the Slovak Prime Minister suggested that the renewal of Russian gas transit through Ukraine might become a point of negotiation in a potential ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
