Jalal Harutyunyan faces 6-year sentence in military negligence case

The prosecutor has requested a six-year prison sentence for former Artsakh Defense Army commander Jalal Harutyunyan in the "D-20 division" case at the Syunik regional court. His lawyer, Andranik Mnatsakanyan, confirmed the news, according to CivilNet.

"Such a severe sentence should not be imposed. If it is upheld, we will challenge it," Mnatsakanyan stated after the February 6 hearing.

Harutyunyan's other lawyer, Arsen Sardaryan, noted that the court will issue its final ruling on February 7.

"At a later date, we will hold a press conference and analyze this significant case," he added.

On January 15, the Syunik regional court found Jalal Harutyunyan guilty under Article 550, Part 3 of Armenia’s Criminal Code for military negligence during martial law and wartime, which led to severe consequences. The defense team plans to appeal the verdict.

On October 12, 2020, servicemen of the 8th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (TsOR)'s artillery division were ambushed near Jabrayil’s Juvurlu village, resulting in 20 casualties and seven injuries. The brigade’s artillery chief, Lieutenant Colonel Norayr Hayrapetyan, remains missing.

According to the criminal case, during the attack on the D-20 artillery division, unit commanders contacted Jalal Harutyunyan’s deputy, Genadi Baghdasaryan, to report the enemy assault. However, Harutyunyan reportedly responded that the approaching forces were friendly troops.
