PM: Georgia to join EU by 2030 despite obstacles

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the country is ready to resume EU accession talks if Brussels changes its approach toward Tbilisi. He acknowledged the presence of "European bureaucratic obstacles" but expressed confidence that Georgia will become an EU member by 2030, Euronews reports.

"We will persist in our efforts and hope that, in the coming years, Georgia will be treated more fairly," he said in an interview.

According to him, the ball is in the EU’s court, and the bloc should be more flexible in its approach to new members.

In November, Georgia’s government suspended accession talks after Brussels accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of falsifying parliamentary election results.

Regarding relations with Russia, Kobakhidze stated that Georgia has no diplomatic ties with Moscow and sees no possibility of restoring them but follows a "pragmatic policy" toward Russia.

"We maintain trade and economic relations with Russia and will continue this approach for now," he added.

In December 2023, the EU granted Georgia candidate status but decided in June 2024 to freeze its accession process and reduce financial aid. The reason was the adoption of a "foreign influence" law, which Brussels deemed authoritarian and inspired by Russian policies.

The European Commission also suspended Georgia’s visa-free regime for diplomats and officials in response to the government’s crackdown on prolonged protests.
