Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on Azerbaijan’s demand to shut down the Russian House in Baku. He noted that Moscow regrets this decision and intends to address the issue through discussions.
“This is a misunderstanding, and we regret it. We will discuss this matter with colleagues at various levels and do not rule out the possibility of it being raised at the level of heads of state,” Dmitry Peskov said during a press call, according to Kommersant.
During a briefing the previous day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova clarified that Moscow expects a prompt and positive resolution regarding the registration of the Russian House in Baku.
Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry reported that the Russian House was not officially registered as a legal entity, which violates the country’s internal legislation. In response, Baku sent Moscow a notice requiring the Russian Information and Cultural Center to cease operations within a month and a half.
The Russian House in Baku was established on July 3, 1997. It promotes Russian culture, science, and education, implements youth projects, and engages in historical and memorial initiatives. According to TASS, despite the Azerbaijani authorities' decision, the cultural center continues to operate as usual.
