Former Armenia national team player and ex-Ajax forward Edgar Manucharyan believes that the national team's new head coach, John van’t Schip, will need time to adjust to Armenian football.
"I don’t know John van’t Schip personally. When I was at Ajax, he was Marco van Basten’s assistant with the Netherlands national team. I believe he is an experienced specialist, but time will tell," he said, as reported by Armenpress.
Manucharyan noted that he is more familiar with the new assistant coach, Aron Winter, having worked with him in Ajax’s second team.
"John van’t Schip has many years of coaching experience, and I hope he succeeds with the Armenian national team. There are many differences between Armenia and the Netherlands, especially in mindset. However, Armenia and the Netherlands are similar in football. We also have technically skilled players. I think Schip needs time," Manucharyan added.
The 61-year-old Dutch coach John van’t Schip will take over as the head coach of the Armenian national team, while former Netherlands international Aron Winter will serve as his assistant.
As a player, Winter won the 1988 UEFA European Championship with the Netherlands. With Ajax, he won four league titles (1981-1982, 1982-1983, 1984-1985, 1989-1990), three Dutch Cups (1982-1983, 1985-1986, 1986-1987), and both the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (1986-1987) and UEFA Cup (1991-1992). As a coach, he has led Ajax and the Greece national team, and worked as Marco van Basten’s assistant with the Netherlands. In 2016, his Melbourne City side won the Australian Cup.
