The head of the European Union Mission in Armenia, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, stated during the fourth session of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee at the National Assembly that the EU supports the opening of transport communication in the South Caucasus, guided by the principles of national sovereignty and jurisdiction.
The ambassador recalled that the mandate of the EU’s civilian mission in Armenia has been extended for another two years. He also mentioned that the EU decided last summer to support Armenia within the framework of the European Peace Facility, Armenpress reports.
“We are also engaging Armenian leadership in security dialogues,” Maragos emphasized.
The ambassador addressed the Armenia-Azerbaijan border delimitation and demarcation process.
“We seek mutually acceptable solutions, considering connectivity, humanitarian issues, and discussions on the peace agreement. The EU also supports the vision of opening regional transport links under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the respective countries. Our vision also includes the ‘Crossroads of Peace’ concept,” he said.
Maragos stressed that the EU has stood by Armenia since the forced displacement of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, the EU has provided nearly 100 million euros, not only to meet urgent needs but also to protect the rights of the displaced population.
He also highlighted the importance of the rule of law and human rights protection.
“We appreciate Armenia’s continued commitment despite the challenging regional conditions,” Maragos noted.
The ambassador spoke about efforts in the visa liberalization process, emphasizing its significance.
“This is a crucial initiative that can serve as a catalyst for further cooperation in trade, transport, energy, and green and digital transitions.”
On February 12, Armenia’s National Assembly approved the first reading of a bill to initiate the country’s EU accession process. The Armenian government had endorsed the proposal, submitted by the Eurovote civic initiative, on January 9. The bill will soon be discussed in parliament.
