Deputy FM: Armenia's European roots date back to 301 AD

During the 4th session of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan emphasized that throughout history, Armenia has aimed to maintain balance. He referred to interactions with empires such as those of Alexander the Great, Persia, Rome, the Ottomans, and Russia, highlighting that these were part of a survival strategy, with the country consistently seeking optimal solutions.

The Deputy Foreign Minister recalled an instance where a colleague inquired about Armenia's civilizational choice. "I responded that our decision was made in 301 AD by adopting Christianity. In reality, Armenia is part of Europe, and no one can question this. We must strive to choose the best option in this challenging reality. This is our focus; we need to progress, sometimes with smaller steps, and observe how the situation develops," he stated.

He added that Armenia cannot take extreme measures that might jeopardize the country's security but has a clear direction for development.

"Of course, we cannot take extreme steps that could endanger our country and our security, but we know there is an option for our development: democracy," he said.

On February 12, the National Assembly of Armenia approved in the first reading a bill initiating the process of joining the EU. The Armenian government had approved the project to start the accession process on January 9, presented by the Eurovote civil initiative. The project is set to be discussed in the Armenian parliament soon.
