A number of journalist organizations have issued a statement expressing concern over the recent surge in efforts to discredit "Azatutyun" radio (RFE/RL) through social media attacks. They warn that this trend is alarming in the context of safeguarding freedom of speech.
According to the statement, although this campaign began earlier, it has intensified following accusations from high-ranking officials and their supporters against the media outlet.
Particularly, posts by the Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ruben Rubinyan, and the Secretary of the "Civil Contract" parliamentary faction Artur Hovhannisyan stand out in this context. These officials have accused "Azatutyun" of spreading false information or biased reporting, while also questioning the professional integrity of the outlet.
Some critics have even gone as far as to interfere with the editorial decisions of the media outlet, offering unsolicited advice on whom to invite for interviews, what questions to ask, or why they should not publish the opinions of opposition figures if they contradict the official position.
"This is nothing short of an unacceptable attempt to interfere in editorial independence, something neither this media outlet nor the journalistic community as a whole can tolerate, regardless of political preferences. Especially since 'Azatutyun' has demonstrated its openness to presenting diverse opinions, as well as discussing and correcting its own potential shortcomings," the journalist organizations stated in their declaration.
Instead of tolerating criticism and responding with arguments, high-ranking officials have chosen to exert pressure on the media. This approach is particularly unacceptable at a time when quality journalism faces serious financial and political challenges.
