Spanish lawmaker Jon Inarritu, assessing the decision to extend the European Union monitoring mission's mandate in Armenia for two more years, emphasized that the presence of EU observers plays a crucial role in preventing potential Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia.
"Given Azerbaijan's ongoing occupation of Armenian territories, the EU monitoring mission is of vital importance for preventing further escalation in the border delimitation process and advancing diplomacy," the MP stated, according to Armenpress.
Addressing the decision’s significance, Inarritu called it a major step toward strengthening regional peace and stability.
"The EU Council's recent decision to extend the EU mission in Armenia for another two years is a significant step in reinforcing stability and peace in the South Caucasus. The mission plays a decisive role in monitoring the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, ensuring compliance with international law, and fostering peaceful dialogue between the two nations," he noted.
The MP also highlighted that the mission’s extension would contribute not only to security in the South Caucasus but also beyond the region.
"This decision reflects the EU’s commitment to supporting Armenia's efforts in strengthening democratic governance, upholding the rule of law, and fostering stability. Moreover, it aligns with the EU’s broader strategic objectives for peace and security in the South Caucasus and beyond," he added.
The mandate of the EU civilian monitoring mission in Armenia has been extended for two years, until February 2027.
