Azerbaijan plans to shut down ICRC office

The Azerbaijani government intends to close the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in the country. This was confirmed by Aurelie Lashan, an ICRC public relations specialist.

"The Azerbaijani government has informed us of its intention to close the ICRC representation in Azerbaijan," she said, as reported by APA.

She noted that discussions with the authorities are ongoing.

"This is part of our non-public and bilateral dialogue," she added.

Azerbaijani officials emphasized that this decision does not imply the cessation of cooperation with international organizations. The country will continue working with their regional and central offices.

The ICRC is currently the only international organization with access to Armenian prisoners unlawfully detained in Azerbaijan. Every month, ICRC representatives visit detainees, communicate with them, and facilitate contact with their families.

Additionally, Azerbaijan is considering shutting down several UN offices. The government has proposed ending the activities of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in the country.
