The co-founder of the "Country to Live" party, Mane Tandilyan, who is currently on a hunger strike, stated on her Facebook page that the resolution being discussed in the European Parliament is essentially a response to Ruben Vardanyan's message, thanking its authors.
The resolution states that Armenian detainees are subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment, psychological pressure, and are denied access to independent legal protection.
"The resolution calls for the immediate release of Armenians held in Baku and urges sanctions against Azerbaijani officials involved in human rights violations.
It also calls on the EU’s Special Representative for Human Rights to meet with the detainees and demands that EU ambassadors in Baku attend trials and monitor proceedings.
To support the adoption of this important resolution, we have sent letters to all Members of the European Parliament, urging them to vote in favor," Tandilyan noted.
A resolution addressing the illegal detention and sham trials of Armenian hostages, including high-ranking political representatives from Nagorno-Karabakh, has been introduced in the European Parliament. It was submitted by Francisco Assis, Vasile Dîncu, Nacho Sánchez Amor, Evin Incir, Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, and Giannis Maniatis on behalf of the S&D group, according to "Aravot."
Azerbaijani authorities have officially acknowledged the detention of 23 Armenians, including Armenian citizens and individuals of Armenian descent. However, human rights organizations have documented at least 80 cases of Armenian detainees.
There is credible evidence of violence, psychological abuse, and unfair trials against Armenian prisoners in Baku. Seven individuals have already been sentenced to long-term imprisonment without guarantees of a fair trial.
Since January 17, 2025, sixteen detainees, including former military and political leaders of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh, have faced trials lacking transparency and proper legal procedures.
Philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan, who was arrested in September 2023, declared a hunger strike on February 19, 2025, protesting his unlawful detention and trial.
Various reports have documented Azerbaijani authorities' blatant violations of international law, including breaches of the Geneva Convention (III).
The proposed resolution in the European Parliament strongly condemns Azerbaijan's unjust detention, mistreatment, and unfair trials of Armenian prisoners, including Nagorno-Karabakh’s political representatives, demanding their immediate and unconditional release.
The Parliament has expressed serious concerns regarding torture and ill-treatment and has called for an independent investigation into these abuses.
The draft resolution urges Azerbaijani authorities to comply with their international obligations, including those under the Geneva Conventions and the European Convention on Human Rights.
International organizations are urged to support humanitarian and medical missions to assess the conditions of Armenian detainees in Baku.
The European Parliament emphasized the urgency of diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Armenian political prisoners, ensure their protection, and hold those responsible accountable.
The Parliament called on the European Council to impose targeted sanctions on Azerbaijani officials responsible for human rights abuses, including judges Zeynal Aghayev, Jamal Ramazanov, and Anar Rzayev.
Azerbaijan’s decision to close UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross offices was strongly condemned, as it severely hinders international humanitarian efforts and oversight.

Former State Minister of Artsakh Ruben Vardanyan, currently imprisoned in Baku on fabricated charges, sent an audio message through his family, emphasizing that he has always acted in accordance with his moral principles and has never betrayed them, even in the most difficult moments.
"I was fully aware of what I was facing and was prepared for even worse conditions. I am not a victim; I do not need pity because this was a conscious decision," he stated.
