Parliament speaker questions legitimacy of lawsuits against Armenia

Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan questioned the opposition’s stance on the peace agreement, arguing that it is irrational to oppose a document without knowing its contents.

“How can anyone be against a text they haven't seen? If they assume, they might as well make the sign of the cross. How can a serious politician fight against a text they have never read? Let them fight against the government, against me, or against something tangible, but how can they fight against an unknown document?” Simonyan said, as reported by Pastinfo.

He accused some political figures of “deliberately or unknowingly harming Armenia’s independence.”

“The politicians you mention act as beacons, signaling to our adversaries where to strike,” he added.

When a journalist pointed out that international lawsuits focus on the right to life and displacement of Karabakh Armenians, whereas Azerbaijan's claims pertain to alleged property damages, Simonyan responded that Azerbaijan also talks about the “right of return.”

“No, you’re mistaken. Are you familiar with all the lawsuits? Haven't you heard that Azerbaijan is talking about return, that they have claims, that people are saying they own property in Armenia and want it back? Haven’t you heard that part, or does it not suit you? Who says their claims are baseless while ours are justified? They even claim Yerevan and the Blue Mosque as their own,” the speaker stated.

When asked what would happen if Karabakh Armenians sued the Armenian government, Simonyan replied: “Let them sue, what can I say? I’m surprised that instead of fighting those who attacked them, those who fired at them, they persistently and boldly fight against us. Aren’t we champions in fighting among ourselves? If they are so strong, they should go fight those who have truly taken action against them, not the elected government of their own country.”

He emphasized that if such a lawsuit were filed, it would reveal its true motives and intentions.

“Are they really going to file a lawsuit against our country, against the taxpayers of Armenia—those who paid their salaries for decades, those who protected them, those whose children went and died? Are they going to sue their own people, their own taxpayers? Let them do it. It will expose their true intentions,” Simonyan concluded.

Former State Minister of Artsakh, Artak Beglaryan, wrote on Facebook that despite another unilateral concession by the Armenian government, he still believes Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will not sign the agreement. He also stated that if lawsuits are withdrawn from international courts, many Armenians, including himself, will file lawsuits against the Armenian government for violating their rights.
