Russia remains committed to supporting stable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said, emphasizing that the full package of trilateral agreements between the three countries continues to be relevant.
Kopirkin made the remarks while commenting on the potential visit of Igor Khovaev, Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, to the region, as reported by Sputnik Armenia.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Khovaev had expressed readiness to visit the region again to resume consultations aimed at normalizing relations.
"Igor Khovaev has visited the region multiple times and has been quite active in this area. There are several trilateral agreements that, in our view, remain relevant," Kopirkin stated.
According to him, Zakharova’s statements fully reflect Russia’s stable and consistent position. Moscow has always expressed its readiness to support the establishment of a lasting and sustainable peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the manner and to the extent expected by the parties.
Addressing reports about the temporary deployment of U.S. military equipment to Armenia, Kopirkin noted that, according to media reports, the equipment is intended for training purposes. However, he stressed Russia’s concerns regarding attempts by external forces to introduce confrontation scenarios into the region, which, he said, does not contribute to peace and stability.
"If such actions are taking place, then this is, of course, a concerning factor—one that hardly serves the goal of strengthening stability and security in the South Caucasus," Kopirkin said.
Russia maintains that the best way to resolve regional issues is through the efforts of the countries in the region themselves, without outside interference.
Zakharova previously stated that Moscow had officially requested additional clarifications from Yerevan regarding the deployment of U.S. military equipment to Armenia.
