Fan group apologizes for Georgia stadium provocations

Armenians were praised by a Georgian activist for their hospitality and human values after tensions rose during the Georgia-Armenia UEFA Nations League play-off match.

After the return match between Georgia and Armenia in the UEFA Nations League play-offs, tensions flared in the stadium as Georgian fans threw various objects at Armenian supporters.

In response to the incident, Georgian activist and expert on women’s roles and gender representation in cinema, Tamta Tatarashvili, wrote in a Facebook post that Armenians had “won 10:0” over Georgians in terms of hospitality and human qualities.

“Armenians beat us 10:0 in hospitality, culture, ethics, and humanity. Shameful and disgraceful. At least the national team or federation should respond and apologize to the Armenian side,” she wrote.

Following the incident, the Georgian national football team’s fan movement issued an apology to Armenian football fans for the provocative behavior of a group of Georgian supporters during the match in Tbilisi. This was reported by Sergey Janjoyan, co-founder of the Armenian First Front fan movement, according to Armenpress.

“The fan group Komagebi apologized to us for the inappropriate actions of several dozen fans in the stadium and expressed solidarity with our cause. As I’ve said before, football should never be a reason for hostility or negativity between our peoples—we already have enough enemies. I believe this gesture will help strengthen the bond between the fan clubs of our countries,” said Janjoyan.

He added that he would speak more about the provocations by Georgian fans at a later time.

In the return UEFA Nations League play-off match, Armenia’s national team played away against Georgia and lost 1:6. After the match, a group of Georgian fans stormed the field and attempted to reach the Armenian fan section, throwing plastic and metal containers at them.
