On March 24, Armenia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan had a phone conversation with Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó.
The two officials discussed bilateral issues and highlighted the active dynamics of political dialogue between Armenia and Hungary, an important manifestation of which was the decisions to open resident embassies in Yerevan and Budapest. They also exchanged thoughts on upcoming plans.
In addition to political dialogue, the sides stressed the importance of expanding economic cooperation. Mirzoyan expressed satisfaction with the ratification of the "Agreement on Economic Cooperation between the Governments of Armenia and Hungary" and emphasized the importance of fully utilizing the opportunities created within its framework.
At the same time, the ministers discussed the ongoing work aimed at deepening Armenia’s partnership with the European Union, highlighting the importance of using the existing tools more efficiently.
The conversation also touched upon regional issues. Minister Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized Szijjártó’s welcoming stance on the finalization of the "Peace and Interstate Relations Agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan." Mirzoyan noted that the Armenian side views the signing of the agreement as a logical continuation of this historic milestone and is ready to hold consultations with the Azerbaijani side regarding the terms and location of the signing.
Recently, Armenia and Hungary restored diplomatic relations, which were severed in 2012 when Hungary extradited Ramil Safarov, who had murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan during a NATO training in Budapest. After the 44-day war, Hungary facilitated the return of five Armenian prisoners, following which the restoration of relations was announced in December 2022.
