Armenian parliament speaker sees no deadlock with Azerbaijan

Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan, addressing the chances for normalization with Azerbaijan, stated he does not believe the process has reached a deadlock.

"It was probably somewhat unexpected for the Azerbaijani side that we proposed to sign and move forward within that logic," Simonyan said. "I believe those gunfire incidents warrant a separate investigation and could serve as grounds for bilateral inquiry. Efforts are underway to establish mechanisms to prevent such events—both regarding past incidents and potential future ones," he added, as reported by 1lurer.am .

Responding to a question about what may have triggered such a reaction from Baku, Simonyan offered his perspective:

"I even get that impression regarding past events: the Azerbaijani side may have operated on the assumption that they could initially agree to something, knowing the Armenians wouldn't accept it anyway. That would create a certain perception among international actors. That has been my personal impression. The goal in discussing this agreement was to achieve tangible results, not to drag the talks on indefinitely."

In recent days, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense has repeatedly published unsubstantiated claims about alleged gunfire from Armenian forces.

In response, Armenia’s Ministry of Defense reaffirmed its readiness, in line with the Prime Minister’s Office position, to review Azerbaijan’s evidence—if such materials are formally provided.
