Gegham Stepanyan, the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh, stated that law remains meaningless if there is no commitment to uphold it. He made these comments in a video aired by ArtsakhTV.
He also announced that on March 29 at 3:00 p.m., he will participate in a rally at Yerevan’s Freedom Square in support of the rights of Armenians from Artsakh, Aysor.am reports.
“Building peace on the basis of 150,000 violated rights is ineffective, unjust, and unachievable,” he emphasized.
The Council of States of Switzerland has adopted draft motion No. 24.4259 titled “A peace forum for Nagorno-Karabakh: ensuring the possibility of return for Armenians.” Out of 46 members, 29 voted in favor and 12 against. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and several lawmakers opposed the resolution, arguing it contradicts international law since the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh are not recognized as subjects of international law. Cassis claimed that Baku and Yerevan are close to signing a peace deal, making such an initiative unnecessary.
However, supporters of the motion responded that Switzerland has proven itself to be an effective neutral mediator. They stressed that promoting dialogue between Azerbaijan and representatives of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh could help ensure a safe and organized return for forcibly displaced persons.
