The United Kingdom has called on the Azerbaijani authorities to ensure fair trials and safe conditions for the Armenians detained in Nagorno-Karabakh during the September 2023 hostilities, citing Azerbaijan's international commitments.
Lord Bishop Philip Mounstephen, a member of the British House of Lords, addressed the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, seeking clarity regarding what he described as sham trials against Armenians in Baku, Factor.am reports.
He questioned the government about its communications with Azerbaijan regarding the 23 Armenians detained during the events of September 2023 and asked what steps the UK and its international partners are taking to ensure Azerbaijan fulfills its international legal obligations.
In response, the Foreign Office stated that the UK has called on Azerbaijani authorities to guarantee fair trial rights and security for the individuals detained during the September 2023 military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, in accordance with international law.
"Our embassy in Baku is closely monitoring these cases and regularly updates information to remain informed on developments. We consistently call for the release of all remaining detainees. Minister of State Stephen Doughty raised these issues with Azerbaijani Presidential Advisor Elchin Amirbekov during his visit to the UK in October. On March 10, in a meeting with Hikmet Hajiyev, Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to the Azerbaijani President, the Minister also urged Azerbaijan to seize the opportunity to conclude a historic peace agreement with Armenia," the statement read.
The UK Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have also delivered similar messages to Azerbaijan.
U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated he told Azerbaijani Presidential Advisor Hikmet Hajiyev that detainees must be released and a peace deal with Armenia finalized. Ruben Vardanyan’s lawyer, Jared Genser, has urged Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan to carefully consider the statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump and Mike Waltz.
