France and Mexico’s foreign ministries have welcomed Armenia’s decision to join the initiative to limit the use of the veto in the United Nations Security Council during cases of mass atrocities. The announcement was made via an official statement from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement emphasized that Armenia’s move reflects its commitment to effective multilateralism and strengthening the Security Council’s capacity to act in crisis situations, according to Factor.am .
France, which assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of April, first pledged in 2015 not to use its veto in situations involving mass atrocities.
“The initiative, which we have promoted jointly with Mexico since that year, is supported by 107 countries. This year marks its 10th anniversary, to be commemorated during the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly,” the statement added.
