Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi has welcomed the finalization of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing its significance for regional stability.
“It is very good news that the agreement has been finalized. In our view, the sooner it is signed, the better for both countries and the entire region,” Ravanchi said in an interview with Public Television.
He noted that the region has long witnessed bloodshed, hatred, and military clashes, and asserted that it is now time to end that cycle, according to Auroranews.am.
Ravanchi urged stakeholders to focus on the new opportunities that this agreement could bring not only for Armenia and Azerbaijan but for the entire region.
“As a friend to both countries, Iran is ready to extend a hand of friendship to Armenia and Azerbaijan and will not hesitate to do everything possible to help improve their relations,” he added.
The Iranian diplomat acknowledged the serious disputes between the two nations in the past but stressed that armed conflict cannot be a sustainable solution, as it only provides short-term outcomes.
“The past is behind us. Now is the time for both peoples to explore the possibilities for normalizing relations,” he said, pointing to the untapped potential for economic cooperation that could benefit the entire region if the peace agreement is signed.
On March 13, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals regarding two previously unresolved articles of the draft peace agreement, stating that the document is now ready for signing. Armenia expressed readiness to begin consultations on the time and place for signing. However, Azerbaijan later introduced new preconditions and stated it was too early to discuss signing timelines.
The draft peace agreement includes 17 articles, of which 15 had been previously agreed upon. The unresolved issues involved mutual renunciation of international claims and the non-deployment of third-party representatives on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
