MEPs urge to sanction those threatening Armenia's sovereignty

In a plenary session, the European Parliament adopted annual reports on the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), which include specific references to Armenia.

The reports reaffirm the EU's commitment to Armenia and commend its efforts toward finalizing a peace treaty. They call on Azerbaijan to protect the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh and to release the 23 Armenian captives held in Baku. Additionally, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) urge sanctions against those threatening Armenia's territorial integrity.

David McAllister, the author of the CFSP report, stated post-vote that the adoption underscores the importance of a resolute EU foreign policy in addressing geopolitical challenges. He emphasized that the EU must be capable of defending its strategic objectives.

Both reports highlight the positive momentum in EU-Armenia relations, welcoming support provided to Armenia through the European Peace Facility and acknowledging the role of the EU monitoring mission in promoting stability. MEPs also commend Armenia's decision to freeze its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and reiterate the necessity for the immediate release of the 23 Armenian captives detained in Azerbaijan.

Furthermore, the documents stress the importance of the return of Armenians to their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh and support efforts to normalize Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, emphasizing that border delimitation should align with the Alma-Ata Declaration. MEPs call on the EU to suspend its energy cooperation memorandum with Azerbaijan and urge member states to halt technical, security, and financial assistance to Baku.

The reports advocate for a more independent and cohesive EU role on the global stage to effectively address international challenges. MEPs assert that current conflicts and crises necessitate a bold and consistent foreign policy rooted in democratic values.
