Russian MFA: Armenia must choose between EAEU and EU

Commenting on Armenia's newly adopted bill declaring its intention to join the European Union, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told RIA Novosti that simultaneous membership in both the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU is not feasible.

“We are convinced that it is impossible to be part of two opposing blocs, such as the EAEU and the European Union, at the same time,” Galuzin stated.

He emphasized that unlike the EU, where “strict discipline reigns, subordinated to anti-Russian narratives driven by Brussels bureaucrats detached from reality,” the EAEU is a union of equal states.

“The decision rests with official Yerevan on where it is better to be. We hope that Armenian society will be informed about all the benefits of EAEU membership and the full extent of the losses that would come with leaving it, so that people have an objective understanding of reality,” the deputy minister noted.

He also stressed that Armenia is a sovereign state with the right to independently determine its path of development.

On March 26, Armenia’s parliament passed in the second and final reading a bill outlining the country’s intention to join the European Union. The EU has not offered Armenia membership, and opposition forces in Yerevan have called the bill legally absurd.

Later, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk also commented that Armenia would have to choose between the EAEU and EU, saying it would be impossible to “sit on two chairs.”
