MP says about 200 Armenian soldiers still missing

Nearly 200 Armenian soldiers are still considered missing, opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the Republican Party of Armenia said during a press conference on April 3. He emphasized that Azerbaijan has officially acknowledged only 23 Armenian prisoners of war, a number that he claims does not reflect the real picture, as reported by News.am .

Abrahamyan urged the public not to focus solely on the confirmed figure, pointing out that in various videos circulated online after the 44-day war, several parents were able to identify their sons.

"From this perspective, when we talk about only 23 prisoners, we are putting the missing at physical risk, since their fate is unknown, and it's impossible to rely on Azerbaijani statistics," he said.

The lawmaker stressed the importance of efforts not only to repatriate confirmed captives but also to clarify the fate of those still missing.

"Armenia’s authorities could have addressed these issues beyond the peace treaty talks, yet they continue to show indifference," Abrahamyan added.

On February 7, 2025, a meeting was held at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border between Armenia’s interdepartmental commission on prisoners of war, hostages, and missing persons, and Azerbaijan’s state commission on prisoners of war, hostages, and missing citizens. The parties exchanged views on clarifying the fate of missing persons and agreed to continue discussions through mutual consent between the commissions.

According to official data, since the early 1990s, 993 Armenians have been reported missing. Around 200 Armenian soldiers went missing after the 44-day war. Armenia has since handed over the remains of 51 Azerbaijanis and the bones of 140 Azerbaijanis who died in the 1990s.
