Visa-free travel with EU may take Armenia up to 5 years

The head of the Migration and Citizenship Service at Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Nelli Davtyan, announced that the visa liberalization process between Armenia and the European Union could take up to five years to complete.

“Visa liberalization between Armenia and the EU could take four to five years,” she stated, as reported by Auroranews.am .

According to Davtyan, Armenia will receive a clear action plan as early as June this year. Based on that plan, Yerevan will be obligated to carry out several specific steps and submit annual progress reports.

Only after the completion of this preparatory process will the formal visa liberalization procedure begin.

In July 2024, the Council of the European Union decided to initiate a dialogue with Armenia on visa liberalization for Armenian citizens. The process was officially launched on September 9, 2025, via a joint statement by Armenia and the EU. In February 2025, an EU expert mission visited Armenia as part of the process.
