Foreign Ministry says no more accurate landmine maps exist

Armenia is ready to verify the accuracy of minefield maps previously handed over to Azerbaijan with the involvement of international experts, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ani Badalyan said, responding to Baku’s repeated demands for more precise data. She shared the statement on X.

“There are no ‘better or more accurate’ maps,” she emphasized again.

Badalyan recalled that Armenia unilaterally handed over 972 records of minefields to Azerbaijan on June 12, July 3, October 19, November 1, and November 29 in 2021, without preconditions. Furthermore, as part of its commitment to humanitarian cooperation, Armenia gathered additional data through inquiries and submitted new minefield records to Azerbaijan in early 2024.

Despite these efforts, Azerbaijan has consistently questioned the accuracy of the submitted maps. The Armenian side has repeatedly stated that there are no more precise maps. Therefore, as before, Armenia remains open to verifying their accuracy with the involvement of international experts.

Badalyan also noted that the International Court of Justice has rejected Baku’s request for provisional measures against Armenia.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ayhan Hajizadeh claimed that the accuracy of the minefield maps provided by Armenia was only 25 percent. According to him, while Azerbaijan has identified around 400,000 landmines, the actual number could be as high as 1.5 million. He added that Baku expects Armenia to submit accurate maps of all mined areas.
