Uruguayan lawmakers honor Armenian Genocide victims

During a session of the Uruguayan Chamber of Representatives, members of all political parties marked the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The initiative was led by Armenian-origin MP José Luis Sagian and supported by representatives across the political spectrum, who proudly recalled that Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Genocide.

MPs José Luis Sagian, Ana Olivera, and Pedro Jisdonian also addressed the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing detention of Armenian captives in Azerbaijan. They reminded that the Uruguayan parliament had unanimously adopted a statement urging Azerbaijan to immediately release all Armenian prisoners.

Uruguayan legislators expressed deep respect and solidarity with the Armenian people and the Armenian community in Uruguay. They also welcomed the presence of Armenian Ambassador Mariam Gevorgyan at the session and praised the work of the Armenian Embassy.

On December 27, 2024, the Uruguayan parliament urgently and unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Azerbaijan to unconditionally release all Armenian prisoners of war and hostages, reinforcing trust between the parties during this historic moment of reconciliation.
