Armenia’s multiple medal-winning wrestler Arthur Alexanyan was unable to compete on April 13 in the European Wrestling Championships in Slovakia due to an injury, according to Factor.am .
Alexanyan, an Olympic gold medalist and double silver and bronze medalist, as well as a four-time world and seven-time European champion, was scheduled to face Hungary’s Alex Szőke for the bronze medal in the 97 kg Greco-Roman category. However, his participation was canceled due to injury.
Despite the setback, Alexanyan received the 2024 Best Greco-Roman Wrestler of Europe trophy and a monetary award in Bratislava.
The European Council of United World Wrestling recognized Alexanyan as the continent’s top Greco-Roman wrestler for 2024.
Armen Babalyan, head coach of Armenia’s national wrestling team, was also honored by the European Council as the Best Greco-Roman Coach of the Year 2024.
