Armenia has voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution that condemns Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Georgia also supported the resolution, while Azerbaijan did not participate in the vote.

Titled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe,” the resolution received 105 votes in favor, 9 against, and 33 abstentions, according to the UN.

Among the countries that voted against the resolution were the United States, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, and Sudan, as reported by Factor.am .

The resolution references Russia’s aggression against Ukraine multiple times, stating that Europe faces unprecedented challenges “following the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and previously against Georgia.”

The draft also mentions ongoing efforts to establish a special tribunal to investigate war crimes committed against Ukraine.

Despite its general stance against Russia, the U.S. opposed the resolution this time. During discussions in the UN Economic and Social Council, Jonathan Shrier, the U.S. Acting Representative, said: “Maintaining international peace and security, including through the peaceful resolution of disputes, is a founding purpose of the United Nations. This resolution reiterates certain declarations on the Russia–Ukraine war that the United States does not consider helpful to advancing the cause of peace.”

He added that Washington believes achieving lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia is vital for members of the Council of Europe and the U.S.

“We hope the Council of Europe and all UN member states will support and strengthen efforts to reach a comprehensive and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine,” Shrier stated.
