French Member of the European Parliament Nicolas Bay has stated that Armenia continues to face enduring threats from Turkey and Azerbaijan, echoing dangers reminiscent of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. He emphasized that the European Union's solidarity with Armenia is rooted in shared civilizational and Christian values.
"As a Frenchman and a European, I can affirm that we and the European Union stand in solidarity with Armenia, a solidarity founded on our shared civilization. Armenia, being the first Christian nation, establishes a profound connection between its people and those of the EU. Geopolitically, Armenia remains a target for neighboring Azerbaijan and Turkey, who aspire to resurrect the Ottoman Empire. As Europeans, we must stand by the Armenians and never leave them isolated," Bay stated, according to Armenpress.
He highlighted that, more than a century later, Armenia still confronts similar challenges and hostility. "The complete occupation and depopulation of Artsakh by Azerbaijan is evidence of this. Artsakh has been an Armenian territory for centuries, and now its churches and sacred sites are being converted into mosques, erasing Armenian identity. Some European institutions and countries, driven by economic and political interests, overlook these issues. However, we genuinely express our solidarity and support for Armenians by presenting the truth and voicing the concerns that affect the Armenian people," he added.
Bay also pointed out that Azerbaijan's continued detention of Armenian prisoners is another indication of its aggressive stance. He noted that while there is no territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, discussions about borders persist. Nevertheless, the historical reality is that the people of Artsakh should have the right to live safely in their homeland.
Discussing the peace process, Bay remarked that Armenia seeks peace, but Baku hinders progress by consistently introducing new demands. "It's evident that Azerbaijan, by setting new preconditions, essentially does not wish to sign a peace agreement, thereby derailing the resolution process. A peace treaty is desirable, but it must be based on two crucial and inviolable components: Armenia's territorial integrity and the safety of the Armenian people," he emphasized.
He concluded by stating that Armenia has always pursued peace, and the international community and institutions should provide full support. France and other European nations committed to preserving Christian values will always stand by Armenia.
"I believe that visa liberalization can enhance ties between European peoples and Armenians. Given our shared civilizational foundation, we support visa liberalization while ensuring security conditions. This should be demonstrated not just in words but through actions. Facilitating free movement between European peoples and Armenians should be a key component of strengthening these connections. Visa liberalization is a legitimate process. The Armenian community in France serves as a good example; Armenians are our fellow citizens, hardworking, and have enriched our country culturally," the French MEP concluded.
