Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia expressed his profound condolences in a letter to the Vatican Secretary of State, following the death of Pope Francis.
He noted that the head of the Catholic Church had boldly led a process of transformation, ushering in a new phase in both church doctrine and broader ecclesiastical life.
The Catholicos emphasized that the late Pope had placed special importance on fostering interchurch relations and stood with oppressed peoples, advocating for justice.
“Indeed, with his exemplary humility and simplicity, he was a ‘Pope of the people,’” Aram I wrote.
In his letter, the Catholicos also highlighted Pope Francis' “courageous stance in recognizing the Armenian Genocide, as well as his support for the Armenians of Artsakh.”
The funeral service for Pope Francis will take place on April 26. Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II plans to attend.
