U.S. marks Armenian Remembrance Day, reaffirms strong ties

In his April 24 statement, on Armenian Remembrance Day, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed strong ties with Armenia, however, declining to use the term “genocide” to describe the 1915 killings of about million and a half Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.

The message reads: “Today marks the solemn remembrance of the Meds Yeghern, as the president pays tribute to the innocent lives lost during one of the most devastating tragedies of the 20th century. Beginning in 1915, approximately one and a half million Armenians were forcibly displaced and killed in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. On this day of reflection, the United States stands in solidarity with the Armenian community both in America and worldwide, remembering the countless victims of this atrocity.

“April 24th each year serves as a time to reflect on the lasting and deep-rooted connection between the Armenian and American peoples. The U.S. acknowledges the historic efforts of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, founded in 1915 to provide essential humanitarian aid to displaced Armenians. The contributions and volunteer work of thousands of Americans to support those driven from their homes are remembered with pride and gratitude.

“This day is also a testament to the resilience and strength shown by Armenians in the aftermath of tragedy. The United States has been enriched by the cultural legacy Armenians have brought, including distinguished military veterans, acclaimed artists, prominent architects, and accomplished entrepreneurs.

“As the nation honors the memory of those who perished, the administration reiterates its commitment to defending religious liberty and safeguarding at-risk minority communities. The U.S. looks forward to strengthening its strategic ties with Armenia while fostering regional stability in the ongoing pursuit of shared security and prosperity.”
