A bill to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915 has been introduced in Moldova’s parliament, according to Moldovan outlet Point.

The proposal was initiated by ethnic Armenian MP Hayk Vardanyan.

“110 years ago, in 1915, tragic events began in the Ottoman Empire, resulting in the death of more than 1.5 million Armenians. Historians and experts have described these events as the Armenian Genocide, and many countries have already recognized them as such,” the explanatory note reads.

The proposal emphasizes that Moldova’s Armenian community commemorates the anniversary annually, and similar resolutions have been adopted in numerous countries — including six of the G7 members, most EU states, the U.S., Canada, and Russia.

During a briefing in parliament, MP Hayk Vardanyan stated, “This bill is not political, but rather aims to place Moldova among countries that honor human dignity, interethnic tolerance, harmony, human rights, and historical justice.”

He also noted that “this parliament, with its mandate ending in a few months, has the opportunity to end on a high note by voting in favor of such a noble and important initiative, especially as a candidate country for EU membership.”

Lawyer Mariana Barashyants addressed the legal aspects of the issue and presented international precedents for Armenian Genocide recognition.
