Kallas meets Armenian president ahead of planned visit

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, met with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan in Rome to discuss her upcoming visit to Armenia. Kallas shared the news on the X platform.

“In Rome, I discussed my upcoming visit to Armenia with President Vahagn Khachaturyan. I reaffirmed the EU’s strong commitment to deepening ties and exchanged views on the situation in the South Caucasus, including efforts towards peace and the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” she wrote.

Kallas emphasized the EU’s commitment to fostering peace in the South Caucasus and supporting the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

President Vahagn Khachaturyan attended Pope Francis’s funeral ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Following the event, he engaged in informal conversations with colleagues, addressing a number of agenda items.

Several European lawmakers and members of the European Parliament criticized Kallas’s visit to Baku, stating that she preferred to visit authoritarian Azerbaijan over democratic Armenia. They considered this choice a neglect of a country committed to democratic values and still facing threats from Azerbaijan.
