Armenia does not plan to withdraw its peacekeepers from Kosovo, despite recent remarks by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This information was confirmed by a written response from Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Sputnik Armenia.
In a recent interview with Public Television of Armenia, Pashinyan stated that the Armenian army has no issues to resolve beyond the internationally recognized territory of Armenia. On April 15, addressing the National Assembly, he reiterated that the Armenian army has no, and will not have, any missions outside the country’s sovereign and recognized territory.
Following the Prime Minister’s remarks, media outlets requested clarification from the Foreign Ministry regarding the role of Armenian peacekeepers in Kosovo and whether Armenia plans to recall them.
The Ministry responded that the primary goal of peacekeeping missions is to maintain peace, and Armenia remains committed to the peace agenda, including on a global scale.
"By participating in the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, the Republic of Armenia contributes to international efforts aimed at easing tensions and establishing stability in the Balkans," the Ministry stated.
It emphasized the importance of Armenian peacekeepers' involvement in international missions, noting the value of expanding partnerships for peace-building.
"Armenian Armed Forces peacekeepers are integrated into the KFOR forces established under United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1244. The main tasks of KFOR include creating security conditions and preventing the resumption of hostilities, which the Armenian peacekeeping forces are fully engaged in," the Ministry’s statement reads.
The Ministry also noted that Armenia’s participation in international peacekeeping missions strengthens its defense capabilities according to international standards and acquired experience, making the country more resilient to emerging threats.
The Foreign Ministry concluded that Armenia is ready to continue its role in the Kosovo peacekeeping mission, supporting efforts to enhance stability and peace in the region.
It also mentioned that Armenian peacekeepers are currently involved in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon.
