Azerbaijani MP Azer Badamov, part of a delegation invited by the Russian side to attend events in Astrakhan region marking the birthday of former President Heydar Aliyev, was detained at a Moscow airport and prevented from boarding his flight.
According to 1news.az, Badamov was informed at the airport that he was banned from entering Russia. No explanation was provided to either him or the delegation members.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident and labeled it an “unfriendly act,” demanding clarification, as reported by Trend.
“Yes, this incident indeed took place today. The visit of the delegation, including MP Azer Badamov, was organized by invitation of Denis Afanasyev, Deputy Governor and Head of the Government of Astrakhan region, to participate in events marking the 102nd birthday of Heydar Aliyev, the national leader of the Azerbaijani people.
Despite traveling from Baku to Moscow, the Russian side detained MP Badamov at the airport without prior notice or explanation, stating that his entry was prohibited. After being held at the airport for several hours, he was returned to Azerbaijan.
Our embassy in Russia urgently contacted the Russian Foreign Ministry. The official representative of the Ministry confirmed that the issue would be reviewed but provided no reason for the decision.
We consider this decision an unfriendly step by the Russian side and await clarifications,” the Azerbaijani MFA stated.
