Trump says third term not under consideration

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected claims that he is considering a third term in office, emphasizing that such a move is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution.

"I'll be an eight-year president, I'll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important," Trump said, according to BBC.

At 78, Trump has previously claimed he was “not joking” about his interest in serving a third or even fourth term. However, he later clarified that his remarks were meant to provoke what he called the "fake news media."

Despite his denial, The Trump Organization has marketed “Trump 2028” hats, prompting speculation about his intentions once his second term ends in January 2029.

Speaking from his Florida home in a Friday interview, Trump acknowledged that he has received multiple “requests” urging him to pursue a third term.

"So many people want me to do it," he stated, just days after marking 100 days into his second term.

"It's something that, to the best of my knowledge, you're not allowed to do. I don't know if that's constitutional that they're not allowing you to do it or anything else," he added.

He also noted, "there are many people selling the 2028 hat."

"But this is not something I'm looking to do," Trump said, adding that he has potential successors in mind, naming Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment explicitly states, "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

Amending the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives, along with ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures.

Still, some Trump supporters argue that an untested loophole in the Constitution could allow for a third term. When asked by NBC whether anyone had directly pitched such theories to him, Trump avoided a direct answer, saying, "in a capacity of being a big supporter, many people have said different things."
