Armenia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Arpine Sargsyan, met with the Ambassador of Greece to Armenia, Christos Sofianopoulos, for discussions focused on launching the process of visa liberalization with the European Union. Ambassador Sofianopoulos reaffirmed his country’s full support for this initiative.

The officials also addressed steps to deepen bilateral cooperation between Armenia and Greece. Sargsyan welcomed the ambassador and highlighted the strong friendship between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening cooperation at the ministerial level and tapping into existing potential.

Ambassador Sofianopoulos expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated Greece’s readiness to expand collaboration in various areas.

During the meeting, both parties had in-depth discussions on potential cooperation in the police system, civil protection, migration, and citizenship.

On March 26, the Armenian National Assembly passed a bill in its final reading to initiate a process of EU accession. The government had approved the bill in January, following a proposal from the civil initiative Eurovotе. However, the EU has not yet officially invited Armenia to join, and opposition parties have labeled the measure legally absurd. Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk has said Armenia must choose between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the EU.
