On June 2, Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan hosted Vassilis Maragos, Head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, to discuss ongoing efforts toward visa liberalization, including legislative reforms and the introduction of biometric passports.
Minister Sargsyan emphasized the close and effective cooperation between Armenia and the EU, which has been expanding across various sectors. Ambassador Maragos expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed the EU's support for Armenia's reform initiatives.
The meeting also addressed Minister Sargsyan's upcoming visit to Brussels and the agenda items to be discussed during the trip.
Additionally, the parties reviewed existing cooperation programs in the fields of policing and emergency services, as well as potential new support from the EU.
On March 26, Armenia's National Assembly approved a bill initiating the EU accession process, following the government's endorsement on January 9. The proposal, introduced by the Eurovote civic initiative, has not yet led to an official invitation from the EU. Opposition parties have criticized the bill as legally unfounded. The President of Armenia has signed the bill into law.
