Infertility rate in Armenia reaches 18.2%

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has released its State of World Population 2025 report, focusing on the global fertility crisis. The report reveals a declining global birth rate based on research conducted in 14 countries representing 37% of the world’s population.

According to the report, Armenia’s infertility rate stands at 18.2%, comprising 2.7% primary infertility and 15.5% secondary (preventable) infertility.

Data from Armenia’s Statistical Committee also show a rise in the average age at first marriage for both men and women. Between 2018 and 2023, Armenia saw a slight increase in its fertility rate, reaching 1.9 children per woman.

Nonetheless, more than 60% of Armenian households are childless. Approximately 16% have two children, around 15% have one, and only about 7% have three or more children.

The report also notes that Armenian families most commonly express a desire to have three children.

The main reasons cited for preferring larger families include: ensuring family stability (27.3%), facilitating better upbringing (15.7%), alignment with traditional Armenian cultural norms (12.0%), responding to contemporary societal needs (9.7%), and continuing family patterns observed in previous generations (6.0%).
