Armenia marks Constitution Day

Armenia marks Constitution Day today, July 5.

The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia was adopted through a national referendum held on July 5, 1995. Article 1 of the Constitution declares that the Republic of Armenia is a “sovereign, democratic, social, legal state.”

The Constitution was amended on November 27, 2005, again through a public referendum. The most recent constitutional changes took place on December 5, 2015, transitioning Armenia from a semi-presidential system to a parliamentary model.

As a result of these latest changes, Armenia officially shifted away from a semi-presidential system of governance to adopt a parliamentary form of government.
