Armenia’s Investigative Committee has confirmed that it conducted a search at the Artsakh Representation Office in Yerevan but has refused to provide any details regarding the legal grounds or purpose of the operation, Aysor.am reports.
“We are not commenting,” the Committee stated when asked for clarification.
The search took place on December 11, one day after a parliamentary hearing was held at the same location, focused on the possible return of displaced residents of Nagorno-Karabakh.
No official statement has yet been issued connecting the search with the hearing. However, opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan from the I Have Honor faction wrote on Facebook that the timing of the search, immediately following the hearing, raises doubts.
“In the aftermath of a discussion on the return of displaced Artsakh residents, the Investigative Committee is conducting a search at the Artsakh Representation. As Azerbaijan pressures Armenian authorities and promotes the artificial notion of ‘Western Azerbaijan’ while threatening return claims, the Armenian government is taking another step to appease Baku,” he wrote.
He accused the government of aligning its actions with Azerbaijani demands, creating the impression of external influence behind the decision.
In parallel, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a media briefing in Hamburg that continued promotion of a return agenda equates to restarting the Karabakh movement, something he called “very dangerous.”
“I’ve said we must not resume the Karabakh movement. That movement has ended, and attempts to revive it are unhelpful,” Pashinyan said, emphasizing that statements in Armenia suggesting the Karabakh issue remains unresolved are closely observed by Azerbaijan.
No further public explanation has been given by the Investigative Committee regarding the search or its relation, if any, to the political discourse on Artsakh.
Pashinyan also recently proposed to Azerbaijan the development of a joint roadmap to simultaneously close the topics of “Western Azerbaijan” and the return of Karabakh Armenians.
