Armenia's State Revenue Committee has reported the prevention of an attempted transit of 161 kilograms of heroin through Armenian territory.
The incident occurred recently at the Agarak border crossing, where customs officers used an X-ray scanner to inspect a truck and trailer arriving from Iran. Suspicion arose regarding a hidden compartment in the front of the trailer, which was operated by a Turkish national. The information was passed to the anti-smuggling department, which, in coordination with other customs personnel, conducted a detailed inspection using technical tools.
The search uncovered a concealed compartment containing 322 packages wrapped in transparent adhesive tape. The packages held a total of 161 kilograms of heroin.
Following the discovery, Turkish citizen A.A. was detained on reasonable suspicion of drug trafficking. He was handed over to the regional investigative department of Armenia’s Investigative Committee in Syunik.
As part of the criminal proceedings launched by the Syunik regional investigative department, the suspect has been formally arrested. The case has been transferred to the division handling trafficking, sexual offenses against minors, and illegal drug circulation. A court has imposed pre-trial detention.
Operational intelligence measures conducted by the anti-smuggling division revealed that the heroin was intended to be transported via Armenia to Georgia.
Currently, a large-scale investigation is underway by the customs service and the Investigative Committee to identify the organizers behind this major drug shipment.
All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court ruling in accordance with Armenian law.
