Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan has announced a major shift in Armenia’s prison demographics, describing it as a “historic” development over the past five years. For the first time in recent years, the number of convicted prisoners has surpassed that of pretrial detainees.
“As of today, we have 24 more convicts than detainees. In the past five years, we’ve never seen this. The number of detainees was always higher. This is a highly positive indicator,” Galyan said, according to Radar Armenia.
She expressed hope that as legal proceedings accelerate, the gap will widen further in favor of convicted inmates, signaling improved judicial efficiency.
