Marukyan pushes for safety laws before Turkey border opens

Edmon Marukyan, leader of the Bright Armenia party, stated that before the possible opening of the Armenia-Turkey border, Armenia must first adopt proper legislative measures to safeguard its national interests.

In a Facebook video, he said he had proposed this idea in a brief video clip that contained no criticism, presenting a patriotic position. However, he noted that he was subsequently attacked online with vulgar language by users with Armenian names.

Marukyan questioned whether these reactions truly came from Armenian users.

“There was no criticism in the video. I didn’t criticize the authorities, the opposition, Turkey, or Azerbaijan. It was a patriotic position, a proposal and a call to action. Yet after that, accounts with Armenian names launched verbal attacks against me on social media,” Marukyan said.

He emphasized that such reactions, particularly from accounts with Armenian identities, raise serious questions. He expressed doubt as to whether the backlash originated from Armenian users or was externally influenced.

“It raises the question, who are these users? Is there now a ‘Western Azerbaijan community’ in Armenia? Are there groups protecting Turkish and Azerbaijani interests? I don't want to believe that there are Armenians who, on the eve of opening the border with Turkey, want to see our country legally unprotected and vulnerable,” he added.

In December 2021, Yerevan and Ankara announced their readiness to take steps toward normalizing relations. In 2022, representatives of the two countries agreed in Vienna to open the border for third-country citizens and begin direct cargo air transport. However, these agreements have yet to be implemented.

In September 2025, Serdar Kılıç visited Armenia. Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the sides discussed implementing the July 1, 2022 agreements and agreed to accelerate the process.
