Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan announced that one of the topics to be discussed during U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to Armenia is Washington’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran, according to RFE/RL.
On February 7, following negotiations with Iran in Oman, the U.S. President signed an executive order introducing additional tariffs on countries that continue business with Tehran.
“We exported roughly $50 million worth of goods to the United States last year. Naturally, there are products that will lose significant competitiveness under such conditions,” Papoyan told reporters.
Iran is currently Armenia’s fourth-largest trading partner, and economic analysts argue that Armenian-Iranian trade ties play a vital role in the national economy.
When asked whether the issue of Armenian captives sentenced in Baku would also be raised, Papoyan responded that all matters relevant to the Armenia–U.S. agenda will be addressed.
J.D. Vance is set to arrive in Yerevan on February 9 and will meet with the Armenian Prime Minister. He is scheduled to travel to Baku on February 10.
