Tusk praises Armenia’s European course

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Armenian-Polish relations have evolved into a friendship “without any preconditions” after talks in Warsaw with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He added that their personal relations have also developed in the same spirit.

“Today, I can state that we share similar objectives. Armenians are highly valued in Poland. I would like to highlight the work you have done. I know how much effort was required to implement your political vision. You should serve as an example in pursuing that political path. It is also important to convey to society that peace is of paramount importance. Peace is a priority. Although this is a difficult road requiring great effort, it is highly commendable and appreciated by me. I wish the Armenian people and you personally every success on that path. I also want to say that it is very commendable that Armenia has chosen the European path. This is a very active topic of discussion — how to expand the large family of the European Union.

…We are very cautious, but also clearly open to enlarging the European Union to all countries that choose democracy, independence and peace. I am confident that your policy is moving in that direction, and I would like once again to express my deep gratitude for your approach,” Tusk said.

He noted that military cooperation in the security sphere would benefit not only Armenia but the entire region.

“I believe we will continue our security cooperation,” he said.

For his part, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the visit marks and signals a new stage in bilateral relations and invited Tusk to attend the European Political Community summit to be held in Yerevan in May.

“It was very important for me and our delegation to hear your assessments, particularly regarding the law adopted in Armenia last year on launching the process of accession to the European Union. The encouraging words you expressed have truly given us renewed confidence to continue more decisively along the path of democratic reforms, where our primary goal is to make Armenia a country that meets European and European Union standards. I will not hide — and you know this not from hearsay — that democratic reforms are a very complex process.

In this regard, Poland is a vivid example of how democracy can be combined with a strong security system, a strong economy and, of course, strong partnerships on the international stage. In this context, I am pleased to note that alongside our traditional historical ties, our agenda of democratic reforms is being added, and I must emphasize that we highly appreciate Poland’s support for Armenia’s democratic reforms and the peace process taking place in our region. The path of freedom that Poland has gone through and its process of building a democratic society are exemplary for us. Once again, allow me to thank you for the warm welcome and, of course, I look forward with great pleasure to welcoming you in May at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.”

In the presence of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, an agreement on military-technical cooperation between Armenia and the Republic of Poland was signed. The document was signed by Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
