Court orders house arrest for lawyer Ruben Hakobyan

A house arrest measure has been imposed on lawyer Ruben Hakobyan, according to his defense lawyer Liana Gasparyan, Sputnik Armenia reported.

Earlier, it had been reported that Hakobyan had been detained, with the case being investigated in Armenia’s Lori Province.

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has published an audio recording related to the case.

According to the committee, during the trial the lawyer, having reached a preliminary agreement with the accused person’s brother, attempted to persuade a witness in a murder case to change previously given testimony.

It was stated that the accused person’s brother also threatened the witness with murder so that the witness would alter the testimony given during both the pre-trial investigation and the court hearing and present false testimony that could help the defendant avoid responsibility.

The statement also said the witness was allegedly given a bribe of an amount not yet determined by the investigation, after which the witness provided knowingly false testimony.

Public criminal prosecution has been initiated against the lawyer and two other individuals.

Gasparyan, however, said the audio recording is inadmissible evidence, as it has not undergone an expert examination and there is no expert conclusion confirming who is speaking in the recording or whether it is authentic.

“I can state clearly that the accusation has nothing to do with Ruben Hakobyan,” she said.

She also added that numerous lawyers have joined the defense of their colleague.
